How to find the right cleanser for your skin

No matter your age or gender, the first step to any skincare routine should always be to properly cleanse your skin. You should ideally be cleansing twice a day; in the morning and in the evening. Not only does cleansing remove dirt and build-up from your face, improving the appearance of your skin, it also prepares your skin to properly absorb any products that you apply afterwards.
Our skin is naturally subject to many aggressions on a daily basis: wind, cold, heat, rain, make-up, shaving, touching, and face masks! Choosing the right facial cleanser can help your skin regain its youthfulness and look healthier.
Whilst we increasingly use skincare products on our skin, we seem to be leaving out or doing a rush job of the most basic and essential step of our beauty routine: cleansing. But a quick swipe of a face wipe or splashing your face with water in the shower is not enough. Daily facial cleansing removes every last trace of dirt, excess oil, pollution and unwanted skin cells off of your face. Cleansing is beneficial in a number of ways, if not done properly, dirt and pollution accumulate at the surface of your skin and could potentially contribute to breakouts, dehydration and ageing.
There are a lot of cleansers out there – which can make finding the right one for your skin deceptively tricky.
Use this guide to help find the right facial cleanser for you!

Gel cleansers
Best for: Normal / Combination / Acne-prone / Oily Skin

Gel cleansers are clear and have a gel-like consistency. Generally designed for deep cleansing, they are effective at decongesting clogged pores, removing excess oil and killing acne-causing bacteria. They aim to remove excess oil without stripping the skin.

We recommend Dermalogica's Special Cleansing Gel.
This multi-award winning gel cleanser contains naturally-foaming Quillaja Saponaria, which gently rinses away toxins and debris to leave your skin feeling smooth and clean. It is lightweight and mild enough to use every day and also features calming Balm Mint and Lavender extracts to soothe the skin.

Cream Cleansers
Best for: Dry / Sensitive / Aging Skin

Cream cleansers are typically a thick, creamy formula that is extremely moisturizing. The rich consistency means they tend to be gentler and more hydrating than other options so they shouldn't dry out your skin. Cream cleansers gently clean your skin without stripping it of its natural oils. They are also a great second step if you like to double cleanse.

We recommend Dermalogica's Intensive Moisture Cleanser.
This is a light and creamy cleanser that you can use morning and evening. It removes impurities while nourishing dry or sensitive skin. Intensive Moisture Cleanser is a lipid-enriched formula that will cleanse your skin while helping to minimize the damage of vital proteins and lipids that defend against dryness, leaving skin cleaner, softer and more luminous.

Foam Cleansers
Best for: Combination / Oily / Acne-prone Skin

Foaming cleansers are great for deep cleaning the pores. They are in between a gel and a cream cleanser so they are great for combination skin types. This type of cleanser lathers into a rich foam when coming in contact with water. It helps to remove excess oil, dirt and cleans without stripping skin of its natural moisture balance.

We recommend Dermalogica's Clearing Skin Wash.
This foaming cleanser helps clear the skin and reduce visible skin ageing. Salicylic Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acid stimulate natural exfoliation to help clear clogged follicles and smooth away dullness. The skin is left clean and prepped for optimal absorption of your other skincare products.

If you love clay masks, then you’ll love clay cleansers. Known for their absorbing power, clay cleansers purify your skin by drawing out excess oil and toxins from your pores. Clay facial cleansers are cleansers designed to remove dirt and impurities from pores while keeping skin balanced.

We recommend Dermalogica's Active Clay Cleanser.
Kaolin Clay absorbs excess oil, and Activated Binchotan Charcoal powerfully adsorbs impurities to help balance skin. The ingredients work together to help purify pores while leaving skin smooth, refined and revitalised

Cleansing Balms
Best for: Dry / Sensitive Skin

Cleansing balms are extremely moisturizing and can even provide hydrating benefits. They usually don’t have any super harsh or stripping ingredients, which makes them a great choice for anyone with dry or sensitive skin. Cleansing balms push out impurities from the pores that can be difficult to reach with any other type of cleanser.

We recommend Dermalogica's Precleanse Balm.
Dermalogica's Precleanse balm is a deep-cleansing balm that melts away impurities and make-up from the skin. Achieve cleaner, healthier-looking skin and reinforce your skin's barrier. It contains a Natural Biolipid Complex which locks in hydration while Apricot Kernel Oil helps nourish the skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth.
